When most people think about their “core,” they picture six-pack abs or the crunches they’ve avoided since high school gym class. But in holistic health and movement, the core is far more than just your abs. It’s the center of strength, stability, posture, and healing for your entire body. If you’ve ever struggled with back pain, poor posture, pelvic instability, shoulder tightness, or even shallow breathing, your core might be requesting attention. The good news? When you learn how to properly engage and strengthen your core, everything in your body works better from your workouts to your everyday movements like walking, lifting, and even sitting.

What is your “core” really?  Your core isn’t just a muscle. It’s several muscles creating a system of support that connects your upper body to your lower body, wraps around your spine, and stabilizes you from the inside out. And it involves more than just your abs. Let’s break it down into four functional regions, in simple terms:

Front Body Core (Abdominal Region)

Includes the muscles across the front of your belly that help you stabilize, flex, and breathe. They’re essential for balance and protecting your spine.

Back Body Core (Posterior Chain)

Includes the deep muscles along your back and the support muscles near your spine. These muscles help you stand tall, lift safely, and prevent back strain.

Lower Core (Pelvic & Hip Stability)

Supports your pelvic floor, hips, and lower spine. It plays a key role in bladder health, posture, and lower-body movement.

Upper Core (Shoulder Girdle & Scapular Support)

Includes muscles around your shoulder blades and upper spine that help keep your shoulders strong, stable, and pain-free.

Why is engaging your core important in everything that you do?  Whether you’re doing yoga, lifting weights, picking up your child, or carrying groceries, your core should be supporting and stabilizing you every step of the way. When you learn to engage it properly:

*You move more efficiently and with less strain

*You protect your joints, ligaments, and spine

*You reduce your risk of injury

*You improve posture and balance

*You breathe deeper and feel more connected to your body

Holistic movement starts from the inside out and your core is the starting point.  Most people don’t realize how much their core impacts their daily life until something starts to go wrong. Here are some common symptoms of a weak or underactive core:

*Chronic low back pain or tightness

*Poor posture or slouching

*Pelvic instability or discomfort

*Hip, knee, or shoulder pain

*Shallow breathing

*Balance issues or frequent stumbles

*Tension in the neck, shoulders, or upper back

*Difficulty holding a plank or supporting your body weight

What can you do now to start breaking the weak core cycle?  Strengthening your core isn’t about doing harder workouts, it’s about training your brain and body to connect to your center. You can start healing core weakness by:

*Practicing mindful movement, like Pilates or yoga

*Learning to breathe deeply into your belly and back

*Doing slow, controlled exercises for strength and awareness

*Improving posture and alignment throughout the day

*Adding gentle, functional core training into your daily routine

In holistic health, everything is connected, and your core is the connector. It holds you upright, protects your spine, supports your movements, and even influences your energy and confidence. Don’t wait for back pain, postural issues or other symptoms to wake you up. Start now. Strengthen your core, support your body, and step into your power one breath, one movement, one activation at a time.
